TAOS ACTIVITIES

Taos is quite historic. The Martinez Hacienda, built in 1804, is a monument to the Spanish Colonial era in Northern New Mexico. Kit Carson is buried in Taos and his home and museum are open to the public. The Millicent Rogers Museum has a fantastic collection of Indian jewelry and art. The Fechin Institute is worth a visit to see the Russian artist’s art and architecture.

Adventure Tours in Taos (758-1167) has sleigh rides and snowmobile tours. Taos Ice Arena (758-8234) is open Thanksgiving through February. Fly fishing tours are offered in winter on the Red River by Los Rios Anglers (758-2798). For snowmobiling in Red River call BobCat Pass Adventures (754-2769), Sled Shed (754-6370), or Fast Eddie’s (754-3103). Roadrunner Tours (377-6416) offers horse-drawn sleigh rides to a sheepherders' tent with a dinner cooked over an open fire.

In Red River there is a unique Night Sky Adventure (754-2941) that provides a powerful telescopic universe tour that takes advantage of the altitude and the clear winter skies.

Visit the Taos Pueblo, the 700-year-old home of the Tiwa Indians. Visitors are welcome to the pueblo, workshops, ceremonies and sacred dances, except for a four- to six-week period each winter when the pueblo is closed for religious reasons. For exact dates, call the Taos Chamber of Commerce (800-732-TAOS). The pueblo is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
