Stoneham is a resort that emphasizes fun, whether on the slopes
or in the restaurants and bars.
Stoneham
is just 20 minutes north of Québec
City. As you near the mountain, dont be fooled. The resort
is much larger than the few trails you see directly ahead. Thirty-two
trails stretch across three mountains. The emphasis here is not
on how big the vertical drops are (they range from 1,140 to 1,380
feet), but on how much terrain the connected mountains deliver.
Known as more of a family
resort, Stoneham has terrain from double-diamond glades to leisurely
cruisers. Advanced skiers on multiday vacations will soon want to
escape to Mont-Sainte-Anne or Le Massif. Kids will find a lot of
activities to keep them occupied. And terrain park addicts will
have met their match.
Situated in a sun-filled, wind-protected horseshoe valley, Stoneham attracts locals when the temperatures drop or the wind howls. The emphasis here is on having fun, whether on the slopes
or in the restaurants and bars. Dont let the very English
sounding name of the mountain mislead you; Stoneham is trés
French, with many of its patrons speaking only French (most mountain
personnel are bilingual, however). But thats good news, because
as one regular Stoneham skier puts it, The French know about
food, and they know about fun.
Sixty
percent of the mountain is open for night skiing, and that includes
a lighted halfpipe and snow-tubing area. With its party reputation,
a visit for the nighttime skiing (because youd have to stop
for some refreshments afterwards) is a must for anyone on a ski
vacation to the Québec City region.
