Dining (Area code 801)
St.
Bernard's (536-5508; $$$; reservations; right) in the
Inn is Solitude's fine-dining restaurant, where you'll enjoy fireside
meals in an intimate setting. A new chef brings a changed menu with
him. Classic American cuisine has an inspired blending of tastes
that are guaranteed to make you say "delicious." It's
a Wine Spectator's "Award of Excellence" recipient,
so you'll find great wines to accompany your meal. It also serves
the resort's only formal breakfast ($), with both a continental
buffet and made-to-order specialties.
Creekside Restaurant (536-5785;
$$-$$$), on the first floor of the Creekside condos, serves lunch
and dinner. Here you'll find yet another new chef on hand to heighten
the dining experience at the resort. We dined on appetizers to get
a full sense of the menu. Everything is creative and tastes wonderful.
The baked polenta with woodland mushrooms is absolutely out of this
world. Entrees range from wood-fired pizzas to pasta, lamb and veal.
A popular option is the Solitude Yurt (536-5709; left).
Twenty people cross-country ski or snowshoe for 30 minutes to a yurt for a five-course
gourmet meal and then ski or snowshoe back (it's a beginner trail
both ways and the equipment is included in the cost). Coffee and
water are the only provided beverages, but guests may bring their
own corked wine and other beverages. The cost is $95, and no children
younger than 8 are allowed. Reservations are a must for this, and
don't be too disappointed if you can't get in. Salt Lake City residents
really enjoy it and hog many of the available spaces.
Solitude's Mexican-themed cafeteria, Last Chance Mining Camp, is on two levels and can seat about 400
people. Sunshine Snacks on mid-mountain is open for lunch and looks out over "the beach" -- one of the best people-watching areas. The Moonbeam Day Lodge has a caafeteria-style menu and a roof-top deck . Another place for a quick bite is
the Stone Haus, a grocery store in the village, or the Thirsty
Squirrel, which serves items such as panini, nachos and pizza.
There's also a wide variety of dining available in Salt
Lake City.
