The
Cranmore Sports Center (356-6301), at Cranmore base, is a huge
all-season facility, with indoor and outdoor tennis courts, pool,
aerobics classes, steamroom and sauna. It is also home to a huge
(30 by 40 feet) indoor climbing wall. Classes are available through
International Mountain Climbing School (356-6316). The owner,
Rick Wilcox, has climbed Mt. Everest. Eastern Mountain Sports
(356-5433) is in the Eastern Slope Inn. Both schools offer a range
of winter climbing and hiking programs, including ice-climbing instruction,
ascents of Mt. Washington and traverses of the Presidential Range.
The Appalachian Mountain Club (466-2721) has an active schedule of courses and workshops on ski touring, snowshoeing, avalanches and more.
Take a sleigh ride
in the Valley. Try Nestlenooks horse-drawn sleigh (383-0845)
or The Stables at the Farm off West Side Road (356-2694). Sleigh
rides can be combined with dinner at the Darby Field Inn (800-426-4147
or 383-2181), in Conway.
Cranmore, Black Mountain,
King Pine and Shawnee Peak have active tubing hills.
Tthe Ham Arena (447-5886),
in Conway, has indoor ice skating. Two-hour skating lessons
start at $4 for children and $5 for adults. Call ahead for public
skating hours. You can ice skate in Jackson, North Conway and at
King Pines covered ice arena (free with a lift ticket).
At the Weather Discovery Center (356-2137)
experience what it felt like to be atop Mt. Washington in high winds
or practice being a weather reporter and see yourself on TV.
For bargain hunters, Mt.
Washington Valley may have the best shopping of any ski resort
in the nation, with more than 100 factory outlets and no sales tax.
The area also has many unusual boutiques with creative gift items.
For a chance to meet local authors, stop by White Birch Books. The
Chamber of Commerce in North Conway has Visitor Guides; as well
as a map and guide to shopping.
