Deer Valley's dining mirrors the overall high quality (and cost) of the resort, but the variety of exquisite places to eat may make it difficult to figure out which will be the site for the special evening of your ski vacation. The multi-level Mariposa (645-6715; $$$$; above right) at Silver Lake Lodge is the gourmets' top choice, rated #1 in the Zagot Restaurant Guide. Order off the extensive menu or get the full "taste" of The Mariposa's treats by trying either the Chef's Vegetarian Tasting or A Mariposa Tasting menu, an expanded six-course variety of the chef's specialties offered in small portions which are paired with wines. Knowledgeable, seamless service pairs with romantic ambiance. Booths are available and western dress is just fine.

The Glitretind Restaurant (649-3700; $$$–$$$$; below left) at Stein Eriksen Lodge offers creative, American fare. Glitretind's all-you-can-eat skier's lunch buffet with made-to-order pasta dishes, a carving table, various salads, cold meats and delectable desserts is a quite reasonably priced feast.

The Seafood Buffet (645-6632) at Snow Park Lodge, served Monday- Saturday evenings, is magnificent. The extensive variety of seafoods offered at this all-you-can-eat buffet is extremely popular. Reservations are suggested. Sample the Dungeness crab and tiger shrimp as well as the delicious roast beef. Dinner, $52 for adults, $25 for children younger than 12.

Treat yourselves to a three-course, three-fireplace meal served at the Fireside Dinner at Empire Canyon Lodge every Wednesday and Thursday (645-6632; reservations suggested.) In front of the Empire Fireplace, make plates of warm raclette, steamed potatoes, pearl onions, cornichons, cured Italian and Swiss meats and fresh baguettes. By the North Fireplace, choose from veal and wild mushroom stew, beef bourguignonne or vegetarian stew, plus a salad with ciabatta. At the Ontario Fireplace, enjoy fruits, cinnamon pound cake, almond biscotti and chocolate fondue. Selected wines and beers are available. Dinner is $42 for adults and $20 for children younger than 12.

The Goldener Hirsch Inn (649-7770; $$$) in Silver Lake Village serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in an Austrian setting. Traditionalists will find weinerschnitzel, handmade bratwurst and raclette. Regional American specialties are also on the menu. The interior of the restaurant is a replica of one in Salzburg. The inn is styled after an Austrian mansion.

Deer Valley's Royal Street Cafe (645-6724; $$-$$$), open for lunch and dinner, is a bistro located in the Silver Lake Lodge.

For a great breakfast value, head to the buffet at the Snow Park Restaurant. For lunch go to the Silver Lake Restaurant or Empire Canyon Grill. The food is laid out like a magazine photo—great presentation. These cafeteria-style restaurants glisten with shiny brass and sparkling glass. Don't miss their delicious signature turkey chili. It's so famous, they package it for take-home. You can buy the dry ingredients in the gift shop to share with friends and family.
